A back protector (spine protector) shields your spine in a crash. Many riding jackets come with only a foam pad in the back pocket – a proper CE back protector insert is one of the best upgrades you can make.
How to choose a back protector
- Certification: look for CE Level 1 or Level 2 (EN 1621-2). Level 2 absorbs more impact.
- Size: it should cover from your shoulder blades to just above your tailbone – check the jacket pocket size.
- Insert or strap-on: inserts fit your jacket's back pocket; strap-on protectors stay in place on their own.
- Flexibility: soft, flexible armour is more comfortable on long rides.
