Height:
Right height of the boots provides adequate amount of support. Ideally, the height of the shoes should be a few inches over your ankle. Full height boots could be stiffer, but acts better in terms of protection, as during crashes it covers a wider part of your leg.

Built:
The built of the boots should also be considered while making the decision. A superior quality shoe will have a double or triple stitch and will ensure that they stay together in the toughest of situations.  Also, it is advisable to go for boots with their sole stitched over glued soles, as these stitched boots are durable and long lasting. The better the built, the better it performs on extreme tours.

Soles:
Soles aid the facility of griping. Softer soles will have a better grip on the foot peg, whereas harder soles will have better longevity and resilience.  Feature of having oil resistant soles is always advisable.

Velcro v/s Laces:
Boots without laces are a better option, as laces always have the probability of getting undone during a ride, which can be risky. Laces that have buckles are a good choice as they prevent tangling of laces with the motorcycle.

Comfort:
Height, built, sole and lace are not the only things. Once all of this is good, it must be comfortable as well. We all know how comfortable it is to wear well fitted clothes, likely having well fitted comfortable shoes would allow you to enjoy your ride to the fullest and save your foot from the agony of tight or oversized shoes.

Material:
Thicker the leather, the sturdier it is. If your bike rides consist of riding in rains or if you have plans of riding in Ladakh, it is advisable to have water resistant or treated leather, untreated leather absorbs water and leads to form a dispersion. Again, oil resistant materials are a better buy. There are boots with armor made of kevlar, plastic and carbon, which is a bonus when it comes to protection.
