Itinerary

Day 0Arrive in Nha Trang

For this Misty Highlands of Vietnam tour, please book your flight to arrive at Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR). We will pick you up from airport and take you to your pre-tour accommodation. There will be some time for sightseeing- to wander around the town and visit the beach for a quick swim. A Welcome Dinner is supplied in the evening, along with a comprehensive briefing of the journey and a map. This is also a great time to break the ice with the other riders.

Day 1Nha Trang - Phan Rang

Distance: 120 km

We will leave Nha Trang and the chaos of morning traffic of this bustling seaside resort town. We will travel along the coastal beach roads towards Phan Rang and maybe stop at one of the beautiful little beaches to relax and even take a dip. This is a great day for you to be acquainted with the bikes and riding in Vietnam. Lunch will be special picnic treat or, if the weather doesn’t agree, then at one of the restaurants on the cove. We will then continue to Phan Rang where we will finish the first day with a cold drink and some stories over dinner. Our resort villa accommodation is located along the famous Ninh Chu beach.

Day 2Phan Rang - Da Lat

Distance: 120 km

We will travel via some main and secondary roads that are a load of fun on the XRs. First we can stop off at the Cham Towers- ruins that date back to the earliest times in this part of the world. A visit to Cham village – the oldest pottery village in South East Asia. Then it’s down through valleys that are seldom visited by foreign travelers. Take part in our coconut bridge challenge and possibly be rewarded with a bottle of local wine. After lunch at one of the small towns, we head towards the mountain resort of Dalat – considered the honeymoon capital of Vietnam. First though, a quick trip to the waterfalls that lay a little south of our destination. Then we can just relax near the lake at a sidewalk café and watch the world go by. If you have enough energy, take time to visit the night markets that take over the center of town after-dark or if you have time watch the local K’ho traditional Music & Dance festival.

Day 3Da Lat - Lak Lake

Distance: 180 km

Today we are off to Lak Lake- via a very scenic route. The largest natural body of water in the central highlands, the XR’s will revel in the mix of roads that lead to this natural beauty and calm of this locality. We will arrive early, leaving plenty of time to wind down and wander around this small town or maybe even feed the local elephants. If we are up early enough then a visit to the local markets is always a treat. Vietnam is filled with ethnic minorities and hill tribes that have inhabited the area for many centuries, and the area around Lak Lake is no different.

Day 4Lak Lake - Buon Ma Thuot

Distance: 100 km

Today it’s a short ride to Buon Ma Thuot, not too far from the Cambodian border. Buon Ma Thuot is the capital of Dak Lak Province- more winding roads, more valleys, more fun. Lunch will be a picnic at the spectacular Dray Nur Falls- wander to the nearby village or, for the brave, consider a dip at the bubbling base of the falls. This is truly an oasis to visit. Upon arrival at Buon Ma Thuot, mingle with the friendly locals, the coffee is great, and a stop here is well worth it to get off the beaten track. Try your hand a making noodle Pho & Drum.

Day 5Buon Me Thuot - Kon Tum

Distance: 240 km

Today, we leave for Kon Tum. Kon Tum is the capital city of Kon Tum Province in Vietnam with close proximity to the borders of Laos and Cambodia. We will be riding on roads winding through towns and valleys. Interact with the locals as we make some stops at minority villages and a picnic lunch across a rickety suspension bridge. Watch as the locals calmly ride across, often 2 up or carrying astonishing loads along the suspension bridge that scares visitors just trying to walk on it! Various inclusions today include visit to Tea, Coffee, Kakao & Pepper plantations. Also, a visit to the Orphanage behind the old wooden Church shouldn’t be missed!

Day 6Kon Tum - Kham Duc

Distance: 180 km

We leave Komtum and ride on the famous Ho Chi Minh Road. This was part of the system that troops used during the years of the American conflict in the late 60s and early 70s of the last century. Today it is a concrete highway that twists and turns its way through jungles and mountains. Be ready for major fun on this curved paradise as it drops into the jungle valleys and rises to the mountain ridges. We can take time out visiting and gifting local Sedang kids on the Ho Chi Minh trail.

Day 7Kham Duc - Hoi An

Distance: 175 km

Today will be a comparatively longer day with some fun riding. We will ride to the coast along Highway 49- a road that wanders through a landscape dotted with spice trees and fruit farms. As we approach the town of Danang (famous for its China Beach and setting for the Robin Williams movie “Good Morning Vietnam”) you will experience the fun of riding on the Hai Van Pass. This pass once divided the different kingdoms of old Vietnam and the views at the top will definitely warrant a quick break for a cold drink.

The ride will finish at Hoi An with the farewell lunch- a time to reminisce about the last week and all that it offered. If you are not in a hurry, Hoi An is a great place to stay a few more days to relax a bit more, do that final souvenir shopping and visit some of the local landmarks. Take time to visit the world heritage listed old town and at night, its famous Lantern Street. Dinner by the lake while sipping a drink, or two, will complete your journey to this wonderful country.

Accommodation details

You will be staying in different hotels along the tour. You will be staying in a clean and comfortable private room accommodation. Hotels will vary in standard but all will offer a comfortable bed, a warm shower, and an opportunity for a cold drink and time to discuss the day’s adventure.

  • Just returned from Mystery of the North tour. A few of us girls went along in the back up van, following along with the riders. Poor Hai the driver got his ears nagged off. We were there to offer the riders moral support and could often be seen waving to them from inside our air conditioned luxury van! We were lucky enough to have the occasional thrilling ride as a pillion which was a blast..thanks Phil for putting up with all our screeches and OMG’s in your ear! I thoroughly enjoyed the photography part of the trip…capturing the riders and the incredible scenery. The group really bonded over a few rice wines and before you knew it new friendships were made..and hangovers were under construction! The days were action packed.., a surprise around every corner, the airport pick up, food and accommodation was all taken care off..comfortable accommodation..some rather posh and nice to have your own private room, bars the home stay. Had plenty of coffee breaks..(still couldn’t come at that stand your spoon up in coffee!) The van carried all the supplies and everyone’s junk! Only dissapointing thing was Hai the driver didn’t tell us girls the seats reclined all the way back in the van until day 10! Could of had some nice naps! Most nights…all crashed out and in bed by 10! The people were beautiful as they often are in these countries…heart warming and friendly. The trip ended with a little luxury night on the Halong Bay cruise..Thanks JJ for a wonderful trip and all my new Lucky Bugga friends Very happy ending…

  • I have done the Misty Mountain tour and loved it so much went back and did the Great Northern tour. These were both amazing adventures taking you off the beaten track & both tours giving you a different experience of the culture. You really get an insight to the local life. The motorbikes are perfect for this touring, enough power and flexibility for all. Travelling solo made some friends for life including the tour guides, so many laughs and memories. Touring with them is a must on your bucket list. I am already in the stages of planning the next tour with them.
