Itinerary

Day 1Arrive at Cape Town International Airport (CPT)

We’ll pick you up from the airport and take you to your accommodation. If the weather is on our side and if the group has enough energy, we’ll go for a short introductory ride to check out the city

Day 2Cape Town

A rest and recovery day for those who’ve flown in from far away before we set out on the ride north. We’ll have the whole day to explore the area around Cape Town. Possibilities include touring the winelands, visiting Cape Point Nature Reserve, exploring Table Mountain, or relaxing at the V&A Waterfront

Day 3Cape Town - Nieuwoudville

Distance: 353 km

We make our way north through the heartland of South Africa’s famous Rooibos (Redbush) tea growing area and through the Cederberg mountain range. Two spectacular mountain passes take us up the escarpment to higher ground before we stop for the night at Papkuilsfontein farm in Nieuwoudville

Day 4Nieuwoudville - The Orange River

Distance: 434 km

We continue north along South Africa’s west coast and into the dry but starkly beautiful Richtersveld. After crossing the border into Namibia we begin a two-night stay on the banks of the Orange River at the peaceful Provenance camp which overlooks the river and has an excellent restaurant

Day 5The Orange River (Rest Day)

Enjoy a day’s guided paddling through the Richtersveld on the Orange River or rest up in the peaceful Provenance base camp

Day 6Orange River - Fish River Canyon

Distance: 167 km

Today we leave the tarmac and explore Namibia’s good gravel roads, stopping in at Ai Ais hot springs for lunch before getting a chance to see the Fish River Canyon where we stop overnight

Day 7Namibrand and Sesriem

Distance: 465 km

An early start today to cover the ground needed to get to our overnight stop at the quiet Namibrand Family Hideout where we’ll get to enjoy the vast expanse of Namibia’s desert region and observe the southern night sky at a nearby observatory

Day 8Namibrand - Windhoek

Distance: 468 km

We have a choice of routes through to Windhoek but either way we’ll definitely be passing through the canyon at Sesriem and the dunes at Sossusvlei. We end today at Windhoek where we’ll say goodbye to those riding the first leg and hello to those joining us for the second leg

Day 9Windhoek - Dqae Qare San Lodge

Distance: 551 km

Welcome to those joining us for the second leg. From Windhoek we head east, crossing into Botswana where we end up at the Dqae Qare San Lodge, home of San people for over 15000 years. We spend two nights here soaking in this unique experience

Day 10Dqae Qare San Lodge (Rest Day)

Today you’ll have a range of options to experience life in this San community. These include learning the ancient art of fire making by hand, and the art of gathering food and medicinal plants on a bush walk. In the evening observe the Milky Way, Saturn and its rings and more through a ten-inch telescope with local amateur astronomer Greg

Day 11Dqae Qare San Lodge - Okavango River

Distance: 429 km

Our journey through the Central Kalahari continues as we head North-East towards the Okavango panhandle. You may have to avoid a flock of ostriches as we head towards Drotsky’s Cabins. You can camp meters away from hippo grunting in the water below or enjoy the beautiful cabins at the lodge

Day 12Okavango River - Rundu

Distance: 350 km

Before we ride to Rundu in the afternoon you can hire a boat to search for hippos and crocodiles, or go birdwatching, or go fishing for Tiger Fish and Barbel. Or visit the nearby Tsodilo hills, a World Heritage Site that has one of the highest concentrations of rock art in the world with over 4,500 paintings

Day 13Rundu - Etosha

Distance: 530 km

Today we head south-west to Etosha National Park stopping for lunch at Grootfontein where we view the Hoba meteorite – at 66 tons the largest meteorite ever found

Day 14Etosha National Park (Rest Day)

Etosha is one of our favourite game parks and offers excellent game viewing. The many waterholes attract endangered black rhinoceros, lion, elephant and large numbers of antelope. And of course the birdlife is excellent. You can choose to go on a full or half-day guided game drive in the park

Day 15Etosha - Erindi

Distance: 388 km

We leave Etosha heading south towards Erindi Private Game Reserve. We route via the famous Vingerklip rock formation where we’ll stop for lunch. At Erindi there’s a number of options including a guided bush walk and game drives, or just relax in one of the chalets or the campsite, both of which overlook a floodlit waterhole

Day 16Erindi - Windhoek (Fly out)

Distance: 160 km

We spend the morning relaxing in Erindi before making our way south to Windhoek where we’ll unpack, celebrate the end of a great trip together and get ready to catch the morning flights out of Windhoek International airport

  • I decided at the last moment to join my son and cousin on an adventure motorcycle trip. My wife said ‘you’ll probably regret it if you don’t go’. She was right – I’m so glad I went. What a trip.
South Africa totally exceeded my expectations. The beauty and varied geography of the country was fascinating. There were so many highlights, but perhaps the best was travelling the road into Gamkaskloof or the day we spent at Kruger National park, or perhaps the stay on the Wild Coast where the boys body-surfed with dolphins. I had heard that maybe South Africa wasn’t the safest travel destination, but my preconceived ideas were wrong. We never had any issues, everywhere we went the South African people were friendly, hospitable and interesting to talk to. It was an absolutely wonderful trip, and from Cape Town to our final destination in Johannesburg we felt we were treated just wonderfully by ‘Andrew and Drew’.
    Just an amazing lifetime adventure!
This was a new route for our guide Andrew Vaughan (best guide ever) so every day was a new adventure for us and him. Andrew was absolutely great, from the knowledge of his country and history of each place we visited, giving us the little travel tips we needed, making sure he never lost us. And when we ran into some unexpected surprises, he just calmly solved it. I was very impressed. It was a great ride and very reasonably priced. Thanks so much to Andrew and Drew and everyone else that made our trip so memorable.

  • A motorbike tour in Southern Africa wasn’t on my list of priorities, but when invited by a friend to join him on a Cape to Kalahari tour I decided to give it a go. It turned out to be a very memorable experience, which has left me with the burning desire to see more of Africa. So much so that I’ll be joining Andrew again in June 2018, on his Great Rift Valley northern tour. If you’re after comfort and luxury this isn’t for you, the days are long, the accommodation is a mix of camping and shared rooms, and the bikes aren’t the latest and greatest. However, if you want adventure, mateship and a real sense of achievement; just do it! The bikes are classics, strong, and well maintained. The food is sensational, whether it be at restaurants or by the campfire. Andrew is the perfect tour leader, cool, calm and very knowledgeable about the country and things in general. Thanks Andrew, Drew and the team, looking forward to doing it again in 2018.

  • A grand tour of beautiful landscapes, exotic animals, and great roads. Andrew took into account our group’s preferences when route planning and we had a great variety of accommodations, but uniformly great experiences. There’s an expression that Africa gets “under your skin and into your blood” and I can’t wait to go back for another two-wheeled adventure with Andrew and Ride Down South.
